Our State

It’s not all basketball and Tar Heels (but it’s mostly basketball and Tar Heels). A complete list of my stories for Our State magazine (to which you should really subscribe, because upcoming stories include features on the Hayes Barton Cafe and Emerald Isle):

October 2016: Carolina Coffee Shop Offers Meals with a Side of Memories–My grandparents met at the Carolina Coffee Shop, a place where the memories are as treasured as the food.

June 2016: From Fountain to Fore!–A visit to Pinehurst, where creating a town as a haven for tuberculosis patients turned out to be a very bad idea that worked out very well.

March 2016: Growing Up ACC–In which we sing the praises of the cool teachers who let us watch the ACC Tournament when we were kids in school.

February 2016: Country Hog, City Hog–You can find good, old-style barbecue almost anywhere in North Carolina, even in (surprise!) the big cities.

January 2016: Health and High Altitude–A 78-year-old Jacksonville pediatrician is a regular on Mount Everest…even while he’s taking care of patients back home.

November 2015: No Menu, No Problem at The Beefmastor–A Wilson restaurant has some of the best steaks (and the best tailgating) in the state.

November 2015: The Rat’s Legendary Lasagna Lives On–You can still get the famous Rathskeller lasagna from Franklin Street in Chapel Hill, but you’ll need to go to Pittsboro.

June 2015: Love and Milkshakes at the Soda Fountain–Central Drug has been a hub for Bessemer City for generations.
